Summer is a busy season for your septic system. The hot weather calls for extensive water use due to things like extra showers and sprinklers for lawn maintenance. To make sure your septic system can handle the increased volume, we’ve got some tips for you. Read this quick list of do’s and don’ts and make sure you’re doing all you can to help your septic system survive the summer.
- DO keep a record of where your system is located
If you happen to find yourself in an emergency situation and need your tank serviced quickly, you don’t want the technicians wasting time trying to find it. If you are unsure of your system’s location, contact your Board of Health or let our professionals help you find it. - DO space out laundry
Doing a bunch of laundry in one day can overwork your septic system. Spread out loads throughout the week so that wastewater in your tank has time to settle and filter before clogging up your leach field. - DON’T place an above ground pool over the septic
You should never place anything heavy over your septic system. This includes things like vehicles, sheds and trees. Heavy items can put stress on your tank and lines causing damage. - DON’T plant anything close to the leaching field
Trees, bushes, flowers, vegetables and other plants should never grow near your underground pipes. The roots will find ways to get to the nutrient-rich wastewater inside the lines and break through them. - DO keep up with regular maintenance
